The Canton Elementary kindergarten class will be enjoying several Farm Fresh Fridays during the next several weeks. The first event will be Friday, February 19. The kindergarteners will learn about bees and honey production from Draper’s Bees from the Mansfield Area. The following week, Pennsylvania Beef Council representative, Carrie Bomgardner will present information about veal and the students will sample veal meatballs. In March the Maple Queen will visit the class and learn about maple syrup production.
A field trip to Paul Rishel’s maple syrup production, in Rome and the hydroponic greenhouse at Northern Tier Solid Waste Authority is scheduled later in March.
Funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture “Healthy Farms and Healthy Schools” grant, Farm Fresh Fridays and student field trips teach students, and their families, about choosing locally produced food by making them aware of Pennsylvania agriculture. The school district was awarded $1,450 for the program.
To conclude the events of the year will be a community program, “From Our Farms to Your Arms” on Thursday, April 22, 6:30 to 8:00 PM, at the Canton Elementary School. Area food producers will showcase free food samples of their commodity and offer educational information to the public. A petting zoo and mini-workshops will be offered.
