McCallum Manor Resident Suffers Serious Injuries In Fire

Friday February 19, 2010 A fire in McCallum Manor that is believed to have been accidental caused serious injuries to one resident and forced the evacuation of all fifty residents of the building.

The fire broke out shortly after 12:10 pm on Tuesday, February 16. Many of the evacuees waited at Schoonover's Plumbing and Heating and the Acorn Market Residents were allowed into the Community Room at the Manor about 1 o'clock and were allowed into their rooms beginning at about 1:30. All the evacuees had returned to their rooms by 3:30.

The fire started in and was contained to Apartment B101. The resident was transported via Western Alliance Ambulance to Troy Community Hospital and then flown to the Lehigh Valley Burn Center in Allentown.

The fire produced thick smoke in the apartment and in the building, Main Street was closed to traffic for a time as hoses were stretched along the street and fire engines were positioned.

Canton Police Chief Doug Seeley suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Troy Community Hospital for treatment but he was not injured and returned home later in the afternoon. A fireman also suffered smoke inhalation, and was treated and released, and a McCallum Manor also was treated for smoke inhalation.

The building received some smoke damage in the hallways and the second floor apartment directly above B101. Apartment B101 sustained major damage.

Firefighters and units from Canton, Troy and Franklindale responded to the fire as well as Western Alliance and the Canton Police.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
